I am an adult with autism and ADHD, and I have also worked with children with various special needs for many years. I have gotten a good feel for the things that make kids happy. In my family, I'm known for picking out cool gifts for children. So this year, I decided to make a gift guide to help people find holiday gifts that kids will love! I made this specifically with children with autism and ADHD in mind. However, all of these gifts would be great for typically developing children as well.
If you would like to search by category, you can look at the label cloud just above the first post on this page. You can look for a list of gifts by the type you want (for instance, a learning toy, arts and crafts, or pretend play), by the subject (trains, weather, science, etc) or by the age level.
The ages are divided into toddler (ages 1 to 2), preschooler (2-4), primary school (5-8), intermediate school (9 to 11), tween (12 to 14) and teen (14 and up.)
When using the gift guide, be sure to consider the
person's developmental and cognitive functioning, not just their
chronological age. For instance, a six year old in your life may be able
to handle a science kit meant for much older kids, while a teenager in
your life might be more fascinated by toys that are usually recommended
for preschoolers.
I have used a lot of Amazon affiliate links in this guide. However, please be assured that I put lots of thought into choosing each item to include. I have spent hours and hours searching different online toy shops, reading reviews, and watching videos. In fact, I continue to add to this guide each day. So please, let me know what you think, and what improvements or additions you'd like to see.
Thanks!
